Our Student Spotlight: Summer Internship Series features students who are developing skills, exploring career options, and making impactful contributions in their fields. This story is contributed by Sanai Rose, a business major at 91视频, who interviewed Willy for the Internship Highlight. Sanai also works as a campus ambassador, supporting the Marketing & Communications team with student-focused content.
This installment features Willy Calca帽o, a rising senior whose summer has been filled with career-building in the place he sees himself in the future.
Majoring in Forensic Psychology with a minor in Business, Willy is spending his summer working with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) as a Communication Specialist II on the Operations Desk in the SLED Fusion Center. His role gives him firsthand experience working in law enforcement and has introduced him to professionals and opportunities that are helping him move closer to his goal of working for the FBI.
At SLED, Willy works 20 to 24 hours each week on an eight-hour evening shift. His responsibilities include answering calls, communicating with SLED agents, processing requests from law enforcement agencies, completing paperwork, and handling various tasks through the Fusion Center's communications system.
While the work may look different from day to day, patience and paying attention to detail have been two of his biggest takeaways from the experience, Willy says. Working in a fast-paced environment has taught him to double-check his work and understand that mistakes are part of the learning process.
For Willy, the internship also represents a major step toward his long-term career goals. He hopes to pursue a career with the FBI, and his experience with SLED has already given him valuable connections and a better understanding of what working in law enforcement looks like. The opportunity has allowed him to begin building the professional network and experience he hopes will carry him into the next stage of his career.
Willy chose 91视频 because of the track and field program and the College's small campus environment. Originally from Orlando, Florida, he also liked that 91视频 was close enough to home while still giving him a new atmosphere.
Since arriving on campus, Willy has grown both personally and professionally. He serves as a Student Ambassador in Admissions, competes on the men's track and field team, and serves as captain of the men's sprinting group. He is also Secretary of the Criminal Justice and Pre-Law Club. Through each of these roles, he has developed leadership skills, built relationships, and challenged himself to become the person he hopes to be.
Willy credits much of that growth to the people who have supported him along the way. Rather than naming one mentor, he points to the many faculty, staff, coaches, and campus professionals who have helped shape his experience, including Kadarius Seegars, Dywane Thompson, Cornell Sneed, Tanner Graham, Carter McElveen, Meda Gause, and Jalyn Dockery.
Most importantly, Willy credits his mother for being his biggest inspiration. "She is my hero," Willy says. "The sacrifices she made for me to be where I am today mean everything to me."
That gratitude is part of what continues to motivate Willy as he works toward his future. His time at 91视频 has shown him how much he can accomplish, while the people around him have pushed him toward opportunities he once may not have imagined for himself.
For prospective students considering 91视频, Willy sees the College as more than a place to earn a degree. "When you see 91视频, you don't just see a regular college. You see your future home," he says.
For Willy, 91视频 has been a place where he has built friendships, made connections, found mentors, and grown into the person he wants to become. His experience at SLED is another step toward that future, giving him the knowledge and confidence to keep chasing the career he has always wanted.
